Other People’s Adventures

Hey Team,

The coal mine escapade didn’t work out for one reason or another so I bailed out of Louisville (Lawll-ooll?) and headed west again. There are only a couple of times a year where I really like to make an effort to be near friends and this is one of those weekends. My friend Nate and I have birthdays only a few days apart so it’s always fun to have an adventure around this time (not that it’s not fun to have an adventure all the time).

This year, because of my…unique situation, Nate and his wife (Saadia) have planned some sort of list related adventure set to begin Saturday morning at 9am. Beyond that they refuse to tell me what’s going on and since I dig surprises…I’m pretty excited.

So that’s what brought me back to California…but within a couple hours of landing, there was another little surprise. A VERY little surprise in fact. John-Michael, for those of you who have been paying close attention for awhile now he’s the friend I came back to California for in July to be his Best Man, had a little baby girl (well, his wife did anyway, but you get the point)!

Hey Team,

Here’s the Amtrekker cut of the Fox Business News’ “Happy Hour” program! It’s a little too long for youtube to accept so I’ll have to work on an alternative for some of you folks. (ahHA! Here’s a link that might work for some of you peeps.) But for the rest of you normal people…

Enjoy!

Entertained people are generous people!

How entertained are you feeling?

Not Even a Lump

Hey Team,

Not that this is unexpected now days…but the coal mine trip was a bust for today. Instead I spent the day hanging out with Geneva my host in Louisville (lawll-ooll?) who despite not being able to get me to a coal mine is still pretty stinking cool. (Help me out here folks, I’m totally running out of adjectives to describe all the cool people I’ve met on my trip.)

Bottom line: I’ve spent the day trying to properly encode the new podcast (which should be up by late tonight…for realsies) and hoping that tomorrow will bring me a coal mine.

Wish me luck.

I’m done.

Brett. How cool would you be if you made a donation?

Answer: Pretty freakin’

How-to: Travel on a Dime

Hey Team,

Ever stop and ask yourself, “How the crap am I going to get from New York City to Louisville, Kentucky without any money?”

Yeah, me too.

So here are a couple tips. First: craigslist. In the rideshare section you should hunt down an awesome family that is moving to Colorado from Long Island to restart their lives. Make sure they are driving two cars (preferably a big box truck and a Toyota Forerunner).

Now, at some point, the Forerunner ought to run out of gas by the side of the freeway despite the gas gauge (or gasometer as I like to call it) insisting a quarter of a tank exists.

When that happens I highly recommend running a mile in freezing weather during a light snow flurry (that stings your eyes with every step) to make it to the nearest gas station, where you can borrow a gas tank and catch a ride back to the downed vehicle with a reluctantly nice guy, thus saving the day in a VERY minor way.

I would also like to recommend that when you make a pit stop in the middle of the night to rearrange drivers you might want to watch one of the cats you More >

Little Miss Update

Hey Team,

The last few days have been nothing but bizarre…but I did manage to travel from New York, NY to Louisville, (apparently pronounced lawel-ool by the locals) KY practically for free. It did mean that there were a couple rough nights and I wasn’t able to update. But I have some great stories to tell for tomorrow.

I just wanted to let everyone know that the adventures continue (Yes, even the one’s involving Little Miss Sunshine style 1985 volkswagen bus road trips!) and I’ve met quite a few interesting characters in the last couple days.

Can’t wait to write about it tomorrow and hopefully I’ll have a new podcast up for you by late tomorrow night. AND if all goes well I’ll be Earth deep in a coal mine by Tuesday (let’s just hope I’m not the canary)!

Wish me luck.

I’m done.

Brett.

Hotdog Television Live

Hey Team,

I just had the halfway-across-the-country trek of a lifetime with a REALLY cool family that I hooked up with via craigslist.org but since I promised more info on the Fox Business folk that story will have to wait until tomorrow.

So let’s just jump right into one of the most epic Amtrekker happenings so far:

You kids know the basics. Paul Porowski wrote me early in the week when he found out I was in New York and then took it upon himself to get me on “Happy Hour,” where he’s the associate producer…y’know, like a true Team Amtrekker champ does.

So once things were locked in and Fox knew where to send the car to pick me up (To which I said, “Wait…what?!”) I went into full bore planning mode; i.e. I sat on my computer all day updating some of the behind the scenes stuff on my site not realizing that I didn’t have any clean clothes.

So naturally, about an hour before the car was supposed to pick me up I smelled my shirt and panicked.

A rushed trip to the Laundromat and a frantic run back to meet the car later I was ready to spread some Totally Rad and tell the More >

Talk Show Eating Contest (wait…that sounds wrong)

Hey Team,

I don’t have time to tell you all how awesome my experience with Fox Business and the “Happy Hour” crew was but suffice it to say I can’t thank Paul, Jen, Nicole, Tracy and (to a lesser degree that cheater) Cody enough. I found a spontaneous ride to Chicago tonight in an effort to get closer to Kentucky and a coal so I’ll give them all a proper blogging tomorrow but here’s the video of my segment courtesy of the Fox Business Network!

Thanks everyone!

I’m done.Brett.

Ka-KOW!

Fun!

Extra-Happy Hour

Hey Team!

Here’s the scoop. Thanks to Paul Porowski, Assistant Producer for Fox Business News’ “Happy Hour” (and now an official member of Team Amtrekker) I’m going to be interviewed by Cody Willard on the show at 5pm est today (I think it replays around 11 also)!

Yeah, I know…”Kinda short notice, Brett. You suck.” Cut me some slack team, I was holding out for official confirmation. So, go hunt down the FBN network, fire up your favorite DVR and get ready to transfer some Amtrekker action to the webbernets so I can see how big a fool I make of myself on national television.

Okay, I’ve got to go see if I can hunt down a clean t-shirt.

I’m done.

Brett.

Ka-KOW!

Fun!
