Lux Delux

Hey Team,

**Good news! I’ve single-handedly discovered the one sure-fire way to ensure you stop blogging completely. Just write a post about how you intend to write more.

Even better news!  Here’s a post I told my new friends over at Lux Delux I would write for them…a month ago. Enjoy.**

First, some background: You know me. You know I spent years wandering around North America living out of a backpack and sleeping on stranger’s couches. If you know me really well, then you know that for the last year I’ve been doing basically the same thing (…except now I get to create big urban adventure games at each destination and more often than not I get to shower).

Bottom line, you can’t travel that way, that often, without having a couple of close calls. Two in particular always come to mind, and both took place in everyone’s favorite city of sin. I won’t go into detail again but one of them involves an old man who walked into a seedy downtown bar with a few too many dollar bills in his hand on dollar shot night (and it almost turned into free black eye night for yours truly) and the second involves More >

#42 Ride an Ostrich! [podcast]

Hey Team,

If you like watching me do stupid things (and I know you do) then you’re going to like this one…

“Amtrekker travels to Virginia City, NV to take part in the 49th Annual International Camel Races (Specifically the ostrich racing portion of the weekend)!

Watch as a terrified Brett mans up and falls down.”

AND, as usual…here’s the external video link.

Thanks!

I’m done.

Brett.

Just for the record. Bookingbuddy really is a pretty rad website if you’re looking to plan a trip. It actually allows you to search most of the top website from one location. Pretty handy! But more importantly…our new affiliation with bookingbuddy.com means all you have to do to help out Amtrekker is click on one of their ads and sign up for More >

I Crashed an Ostrich

Hey Team,

Let me tell you a few things I recently learned about ostriches…but first I should put things in a little bit of context.

July 4th of 2007 I left home on this little Amtrekker adventure of mine thinking, “Remember Swiss Family Robinson? Man, that kid on the ostrich looked like he was having a blast!”

Fast-forward eight months to the first time I ever got a close look at an ostrich…or as I like to call them, “Giant feathered dinosaurs.” Suddenly, I was thinking, “Huh, I don’t remember seeing that kid in any other movies. I wonder if he survived the filming.”

Now that I had let fear into my heart it became VERY important to me that I find an ostrich that was used to being ridden. Preferably one that REALLY enjoyed being ridden. Maybe an ostrich somewhere that loved having people on its back so much that it would seek out interaction, softly cooing and nuzzling you until you gave in and jumped on his back making him the happiest ostrich in all the land.

I found the next best thing. Joe Hedrick makes his living raising exotic animals and traveling the country doing shows and setting up ostrich and camel More >

Delayed Gratification

Hey Team,

It was bound to happen eventually. The week when travel manages to take so much time and effort that I miss out on getting the podcast up in time. Obviously I couldn’t edit while I was driving across country (but don’t think I didn’t try). And now I might have a chance if not for the outlet-less seats of your friendly neighborhood Greyhound.

I made the drive to San Francisco without incident and dropped off Murell’s truck (He had an ad on craigslist.org looking to pay for the gas if someone was willing to drive his truck from Atlanta to SF for him) but only had a few hours to kill before I had to hop on a bus for Salt Lake City.

Count on the video being awesome and appearing as soon as humanly possible (UPDATE: The editing is done it just has to compress and upload…but I’ll need to find a place to make that happen. Count on it being there first thing tomorrow morning at the latest!) AND tomorrow brings with it a whole new fly-fishing list-crossing adventure!

Stay Tuned, Team…I’ll be right back.

Brett.

Day in the Life – Traveling to SLC [podcast]

HA! Made it!

With time to spare even. If the train hadn’t been late in Reno I couldn’t have done it. Way to be quasi-lame Amtrak!

Enjoy my day.

OH! It’s here!

Later.

Everybody’s Creepy…Sometimes

Hey Team,

Looks like it’s time to bail on Vegas. I made a couple of good connections that will probably bare fruit as far as being part of a stage illusion goes but the wheels of networking turn slowly in this city and I’m starting to get antsy.

I have to take care of two quick things back in Southern California and then it’s time to hit the road for realsies. So riddle me this good viewers, “Where to next?”

Take a good look at that list running down the left hand side of the site and let me know what you think you can help with lickety-split. If you say come to Iowa and do some crop circling then by gum I’ll start making my way towards Iowa.

Sorry for the lack of posts the last two days I was stumbling through some video work. That should be up soon. But for now I’ll leave you with the other Vegas story I teased since so many people asked for the details:

There’s a little dive of a casino in Downtown Las Vegas, not only off the strip but off any visibly beaten path. I mentioned the name to a woman working the More >

No Cab Fare

Hey Team,

I think I was kind of burnt out on this strange excuse for a city before I even got here. It’s hard to stay upbeat in a city where half the population thrives on cheating the other half. (Which is strange because normally I LOVE those stories.) Since I’ve been here I’ve had a good time with my couch surfing hosts but I’ve been threatened by an old man in a dive bar and I’m pretty sure that last night I met one of the world’s worst con men.

That last part was actually kind of cool now that I think about it. For some reason I’ve been completely fascinated by con men for most of my life. I’ve LITERALLY read every single non-fiction book published in the English language about con men. (I think if it weren’t for my overdeveloped conscience and sense of social responsibility the con man world would have a new king.) And I hope I see that guy again so I can interview him…assuming he doesn’t try to punch me in the face and run when I turn the camera on.

I was walking down the street, minding my own business (which I’ll admit is kind More >

Paging Mr. Copperfield

Hey Team,

People write in fairly regularly with offers of help to cross things off the list. So for many of the objectives it’s just a matter of when and how I make it to the various regions in “these United States.” However, there are a select few that NO ONE ever writes in about. Naturally that’s a little worrying so I decided I wanted to get a jump on one or two of those oft ignored goals.

One in particular (that I’m very excited about but still have no line on accomplishing) is: #24 Be part of a stage illusion. So where would my best odds at finagling my way into a stage illusion be?

I’m thinking Las Vegas.

I pulled into Sin City last night without much of a plan beyond, “Hey, there’s a crap ton of magicians in this wacky little dessert town! How can I lose?”

It’s kind of exciting though. It’s like going back to my roots. This adventure is CONSTANTLY evolving so I’ve kind of strayed from the “old days” when I would just roll into a town only knowing that under PERFECT conditions I might be able to cross something off the list.

The first item to get crossed More >
