Ghost Hunting at Wolfe Manor! [video]

Hey Team,

Here’s the long awaited video shenanigans from that fateful night in one of America’s most haunted houses. (In a fancy new full screen capable video player no less!)

“Amtrekker meets up with Brian Brushwood and CJ Johnson to explore Wolfe Manor, one of the most haunted houses in America!

Nervous laughter and fear induced cursing ensue.”

Thanks Team!

I’m done.

Just for the record. Bookingbuddy really is a pretty rad website if you’re looking to plan a trip. It actually allows you to search most of the top website from one location. Pretty handy! But more importantly…our new affiliation with bookingbuddy.com means all you have to do to help out Amtrekker is click on one of their ads and sign up for an awesome newsletter More >

2009 Travel Blogger Awards

Hey Team,

It looks like that ubiquitous guide book company, Lonely Planet, has nominated little ol’ Amtrekker for Best Video Blog! Pretty exciting stuff! To vote head over to this place and do your thing.

Thanks everyone!

In other news: My video for “The Best Job in the World” went up a couple days ago so you can check that out here. And MOST importantly, I’m almost done with the newest episode of Amtrekker featuring Brian Brushwood, CJ Johnson and myself exploring the wonder of Wolfe Manor so be sure to check back later this week!

Thanks again!

I’m done.

My Life as a Vegan

Hey Team,

I’ve been out of the daily update game for awhile but hopefully this will bring a little sunshine to your otherwise dreary, winter wonderland. (As I sit here writing this it’s 80 degrees in Southern California (or at least it was when I started writing this a week ago…).)

Most of you probably know I spent the last month as a vegan but only one of you knows my thoughts on the subject. Here’s the background: After Katy’s Ironman she talked about doing the vegan thing as a way to spend her month of recovery; figuring that if she wasn’t going to be able to exercise in the same ridiculous manner she had been then at least she’d have a way to force herself to limit her intake in a creative way.

I was just coming off of a year and a half of Amtrekking followed by NovemBEARD and was seriously lacking in the personal challenges department (not to mention I HAVE considered going the vegetarian route a few times) so I agreed to sign on to the adventure. Since we would be headed into the holiday season, many people told us what a stupid idea it was but even more people told More >

A NEW List?!

Hey Team,

I know I railed against New Year’s Resolutions last year and I still feel strongly that if you want to make something happen then you can’t wait until the new year, you have to start now. However, with all the talk of resolutions bouncing around the web it made me think a little bit harder about what the new year is going to bring for me.

I’ve also said that I have no plans to write a new list and hit the road as the world’s most famous vagrant again anytime soon…

But I got to thinking about how focusing it was to have all of my goals laid out in front of me and I realized what a disservice I’m doing to myself if I don’t at the very least write a new list. How lame would it be if I managed to do all these amazing things before I even hit my 28th birthday and then just gave up?

With that in mind I’m going to start working on a new list today and I would love to hear about the kinds of things that you guys think should make the list! (But, once more…I’m not in any kind More >

The Next Four

Obviously I let a couple of guest articles and some other writing projects distract me this week but to get now I’m ready. Let’s get back to those whys so you guys can stop emailing me about why I haven’t written the rest of the whys.

5. Enter a hot dog eating contest: The truth is this one was a long standing desire and I’d kill to be in just about any “eating” contest it’s just that hot dogs are kind of the end all, be all of eating contests and I’ve always believed that the more specific your goals are the more likely you’ll be to step up to the plate and make it happen.

Once upon a time I though that I would finally get my chance to out-eat anyone with less dedication to the task during an after-school program sponsored caramel apple eating contest. I got off to a great start and was at least a half apple ahead of everyone else by the time I reached for the fourth and final caramel coated confection…

Which turned out to be an onion instead of an apple. At the risk of tossing out an absurdly bad pun…that always left a bad taste More >

The First Four

Hey Team,

Ready for some whys? I’ll start explaining why some of the items made the list and just cut it off when I hit about a page so I can continue tomorrow. This will probably be a fairly long process. As I mentioned before, I don’t have a lot of good answers for why I do the things I do.

1. Tube down a river: I had a roommate in college who grew up in Northern California and used to rave about floating down a river for hours with an ice chest and friends every summer. It was one of those things (like so many others on the list) that I’d always said I would do. Every couple months the offer would be extended and I would always find some excuse for why I wouldn’t be able to go. In other words “life” would get in the way.

It’s funny how often we let life get in the way of living.

My own tubing escapade wasn’t quite what he often described so I’m totally willing to give it another chance but for the most part it was just an exercise in forced relaxation. (Relaxing isn’t exactly my favorite thing to do with More >

Stories Behind Stories

Hey Team,

I’ve been working on a narrative that ties together this whole wacky adventure for a couple weeks now. (Some might call it a book…I don’t want to get that excited.) As a result I’ve had to put a lot more thought into the whys and hows of Amtrekker than I’ve ever had to before and strangely, it’s been pretty enlightening.

It’s amazing how much I didn’t know about why I did this and what I learned along the way. I assume it’s pretty typical but over the last year I guess I just got so lost in sound bites that I didn’t really consider just how complicated a process it has actually been. With all of the radio and television interviews people didn’t want a complicated story. They just want a quick, concise, witty answer to their question so they could move on to the next one.

I can do quick and witty til the cows come home so that part was easy…but the “truth” is a lot more complicated. As I’ve been going through some old interviews to get a feel for the questions people want the answers to I’ve noticed that (maybe because I get bored) I’ve given different More >

A Night in Wolfe Manor [photos by CJ Johnson!]

Hey Team,

It’s been awhile since a new update has popped up here but a LOT has been going on behind the scene. I’ve been getting tons of “What’s next?” type questions and a lot of really great questions about wrap-ups. I decided to extend the party video to include some interviews from family members and their thoughts on Amtrekker so that has kind of been delayed…it should still make an appearance soon.

As far as other videos go there is plenty of excitement right around the corner and in the blog world there’s a lot to say about the past so those will occupy most of the updates for the next week or two. Keep your eyes peeled!

Okay…so what happened at the haunted house?

Brian, CJ, Stephen, Mike and I showed up at Wolfe Manor around 9:30 pm Friday night to set up shop and get ready to shoot our collective experience in what has been dubbed one of the most haunted properties in America. The anticipation alone had us all on edge. Standing outside one of the creepiest, most rundown places I’ve ever seen (outside of the Newark Greyhound terminal) the fog literally started to roll in.

To kill time while we More >
