Freezing My Musket Balls Off

Hey Team,

Costumes are something I can get behind. Halloween is probably my second favorite holiday and I put in my time on the attractions at Disney before I became a designer so, although I could never be that guy that runs to a Renaissance Fair or proudly introduces himself as a LARPer, it was a thrill to get the Civil War uniform on and slide into a different time. However, it wasn’t too long after that when I realized I was out of my league.

I walked into the camp where period ground cloths were lined up against the wall of a barn for cover just as day was giving way to night. I carried on my back everything I would need for the rest of the weekend (which is to say, almost nothing). A cartridge box, bayonet, canteen, wool blanket, and a haversack with period cutlery and a rusting plate plus a lump of salted pork. Oh! And a gun.

Noticeably missing were Charley (my MacBook Pro for those of you who aren’t “in the know”) and a sleeping bag…

Before I even had time to stake my claim on a small portion of packed dirt beneath the barn’s overhang I was More >

Reenacting War = Enacting Discomfort

Hey Team,

So much happened over the last few days I’m not exactly sure how to condense it. So maybe I’ll just give you a quick outline and some pictures and the next couple days can fill in the blanks.

**Disclaimer: This is fair warning. I’m almost guaranteed to screw up lots of buzzwords in this post so all you people reading this that are actually familiar with reenactments can just lay off. So there.**

Two of the officers from the reenactment picked me up in D.C. and gave me a lift to New Market, Virginia where the appropriately named Battle of New Market happened in 1864. Along with the “Chesapeake Volunteer Guard,” a group of reenactors that invited me to the battle, I would be depicting a private in the 1st West Virginia Regiment.

I had a few other offers from reenactment groups but I chose to throw my green hat into the ring with these guys mostly because the email from their Major warned me: “We are a hardcore progressive group that highly values authenticity and are more on the extreme edge, if you will, of the hobby.”

How can you turn down an invitation to anything that comes with a warning like More >

#7 See a Live Taping of The Colbert Report! [podcast]

Hey Team,

It’s HERE! Wait no longer!

Amtrekker travels to New York to see a live taping of The Colbert Report but his podcast is foiled when security takes away his video camera!

Internet Superstar

Hey Team,

The live Internet Superstar/Diggnation show on Wednesday was a blast. As it so happened I ended up being the first guest on the show and showed up to Mighty in San Francisco JUST as my phone died so there wasn’t much in the way of twittering going on.

Maybe you wouldn’t think it (or maybe you would…how should I know) but Martin and Gator (the hosts of Internet Superstar) did a MUCH better job of preparing me for the interview than anyone else has managed to so far. Some of the stand outs would be Canada AM when I was told to sit in a room alone with a camera until something happens or Happy Hour when admittedly the lack of preparation came from the threat of a hot dog eating contest….but the fact remains.

When I first got there they did a super quick run through of when and where I would be entering. Which doesn’t sound like much but it’s always nice to now when and how you’re coming on camera instead of just standing around with your hands in your pockets until someone suddenly shouts, “You’re on!”

As far as I know the interview went fine. Much looser than TV but More >

Good Morning Amtrekker

Hey Team,

I had to wake up at the crack of dawn yesterday for the Good Morning America interview. I know when I say crack of dawn I usually MEAN noonish…but this time the sun wasn’t even up when I was.

I also have to say that at that point (in light of the craziness from the day before) I was still kind of in denial about whether or not it was really happening. Even when the car pulled up I was thinking to myself, “Are my friends big enough douche bags to be willing to rent a car and driver just to make me look like an idiot?”

This way of thinking was compounded when I got to the studio in Times Square and my name wasn’t on the list for security. I got to stand around wearing my backpack and a stupid grin while people ran around trying to find someone that had heard of me.

Finally:

“Is this where you’re supposed to be?”

“I really have no idea. This is just where the car dropped me off.”

“OOOHHHH! You’re one of the guests! This way.”

I was led upstairs to the greenroom (right next door to Mariah Carey’s dressing room) and told to set down More >

What’s Colbert Hiding?

Hey Team,

Before I dive into the Colbert Report adventure I have some exciting news! Here’s an except from an email I got last night:

“I wanted to write and tell you that the team here at “News to Me” have selected a few of our favorite stories from the past year to include in our anniversary show which is coming up in a few weeks. Yours is one of our faves! We want to leave it up to the viewers though to determine which was THEIR favorite of the year so we’ve set up a vote on our website http://www.cnn.com/newstome.”

So, you guys know what you have to do. Go to their website. Find the poll on the right hand side. And vote for Amtrekker!

Also, apparently the segment is re-airing this weekend also!

Thanks guys, you rock.

Okay. The Colbert Report. Done. Thanks to Ace I got hooked up with a VIP ticket to last nights show where the guest was author, Mitch Albom.

Turns out Stephen Colbert is even funnier live! I had a great time and before the taping Colbert came out and did a quick Q&A with the audience that was out of character so that was pretty cool to see.

I’ve seen More >

Emotional Roller Coaster [completed objective]

Hey Team,

Another one gone. Another one gone. Another one bites the dust.

After taking a red eye from San Jose to New York, shunning sleep for almost 48 hours and panicking about missing out on the fastest roller coaster in the country AGAIN…yesterday turned out to be an incredible day.

For a little bit it looked like I was going to have just as much trouble getting to Six Flags Great Adventure as I did last October. I spent an hour wandering around Port Authority in New York (the main bus hub in the city) trying to get someone to acknowledge the existence of a bus route I was able to find online but that didn’t seem to have a place in our reality. Luckily, George and Jessica from Boston had decided to join me in the roller coastering and happened to be driving through New York around that same time.

We got to Six Flags unsure what to expect. All I knew was that I needed to get to the park sometime between 10:30am and 2:00pm and call Angel the PR Manager when I got there.

Angel not only greeted us at the gate with tickets but took us backstage (that’s what we’d call More >
