#16 Learn to Sail! [podcast]

Hey Team,

Here it is! After acting like a sick little sissy for a week I finally managed to finish up the sailing podcast! Enjoy!

“Amtrekker travels to New York City of all places to learn to sail in the Hudson River courtesy of the Atlantic Yachting Association! In two short days he manages to break sailing and earn his keel boat certification!

“Heaving to”ensues.”

Kiteboarding!

Hey Team,

I may not be at 100% just yet as I continue to recover from that wicked cold/flu/cholera from last week but that didn’t stop me from getting dragged face first through the Atlantic Ocean today!

I’m back in Charleston, SC where I met up with Chris, who it turns out isn’t just a better than average kiteboarder, he’s also a terrific instructor with an ample supply of kites.

We hit the beach around 4:30 in the evening and got started with a trainer kite (MUCH smaller and less complicated than the kites you actually strap to yourself). Even with such a “small” kite it was pretty clear that I had underestimated how much power they have. Kites that size have no conscience when it comes to dragging you around and letting you know who’s boss. Regardless, I managed to catch on to steering the trainer pretty quickly so Chris decided to move me up to his large kite.

Here’s the interesting thing about the large kite. If the little one had so little respect for people that it wouldn’t even help a little old lady across the street then the big kite would have happily pushed that same little old lady into More >

I Sailed. I’m a Sailor. I Can Sail Things. (No Big Deal)

Hey Team,

This week has been absolutely insane. This is the first moment I’ve had to sit down and write and not feel like I have to knock things out and get on to my next activity. INSTEAD, I get to sit tight, feel clean for the first time in a month and toss things around in my own head a bit.

People tell me all that time that life is about the journey not the destination. No place does that seem more true than sailing.

Thanks to the guys over at the Atlantic Yachting Association I spent the last two days going through a course to get my Basic Keel Boating certification. It was an undeniably awesome experience and for a guy that used to live on a boat on the Pacific Ocean (and still never managed to learn to sail…let’s not dwell on that) it was such a bizarre scene to be sailing a boat between skyscrapers on the Hudson River.

Both days started off with VERY light wind and were actually pretty far down the road on their way to Dulltown. That’s when it really hit home that in some cases it’s probably not worth trying to get anywhere while you’re sailing. More >

#19 Help Out on a Plantation! [podcast]

Hey Team,

I really thought this one was going to get posted on time for once but I ended up having to REedit the whole thing. But who cares, right?! Cause here it is live and in living color (minus the Wayans )!

“Amtrekker travels to the Boone Hall Plantation in Charleston to see if he can find a way to help out. You decide whether or not he actually manages to be helpful.”

Less Than Helpful

Hey Team,

Sorry for the dearth of updates this week. Charleston has definitely been keeping me on my toes and I was staying at a Couch Surfer’s (awesome dude by the name of Lee) house outside the city so there wasn’t much quality time with Charley.

First, a question: How come history gets so much more interesting as you get older? Is it just because you have more personal history than you used to? All I know is “History” was one of those classes I always DREADED going to but (and maybe it’s just because I get to see these things live and in person, but I don’t think so) wandering around Charleston has been awesome and I LOVED seeing the Fort Sumter exhibit and Battery Park. Mind blowing.

On a more personally historic note…#19 is off the list! Ka-KOW!!! While in Charleston I made a day trip out to Boone Hall, the most photographed plantation in America (for obvious reasons once you get there), with Angie, one of Lee’s friends and my private tour guide for the weekend.

I know the list says, “Help out on a plantation” but if I’m being completely honest the amount of help I actually offered is probably More >

#31 River Kayaking! [podcast] (*video problems fixed*)

Hey Team,

Here’s this week’s video starring your friendly neighborhood Amtrekker.

“Amtrekker travels to the Chattooga River in South Carolina to river kayak, get soaked and try not to die.

…that’s pretty much what happened.

(Scenes from Deliverance were roundly avoided.)”

Thanks everyone!

My Deliverance from #31

Hey Team,

I managed to avoid not only banjo music but also any opportunities to see if I’m half the actor Ned Beatty is in what was easily one of the coolest experiences of Amtrekker so far.

Here’s the quick back-story: About a month and a half ago I got an email from Carolyn at www.wildwaterrafting.com saying they wanted to help me out with #31 on the list. Wild Water Ltd. operates on five rivers but the one I couldn’t wait to get out on was the Chattooga River near Long Creek, SC.

“But why the Chattooga, Brett? Kind of a silly name don’t you think?”

Well, welcome back, Disembodied Voice. Haven’t heard from you in awhile. But thanks for asking! (And, you’re right, kind of a silly name.)

The Chattooga is the same river that James Dickey was writing about in his book “Deliverance” AND, it’s the same river they used to film large portions of the movie, (you guessed it…) “Deliverance!”

So as soon as I got the message I called dibs on Burt Reynolds’s character and set things up for the next time I was near South Carolina, a.k.a. now.

(My thoughts always get kind of disjointed when I get excited so you may have to bear More >

#12 Take Part in a Civil War Reenactment! [podcast]

Hey Team,

Yes, the video is very late. No, there weren’t very many updates this week. BUT, feast your peepers on this little baby!

Amtrekker travels to New Market, VA and takes part in the cleverly named Battle of New Market!

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player. var WT4_4 = { params : { wmode : "opaque", allowscriptaccess : "always", allownetworking : "all", allowfullscreen : "true"}, flashvars : { file : "http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amtrekker.com%2Findex.php%3Fxspf%3Dtrue%26id%3D13", volume : "80", bufferlength : "5", controlbar : "over", 'logo.hide' : "false", shuffle : "false", playlist : "bottom"}, attr : { id : "WT4", name : "WT4"}, start : function() { swfobject.embedSWF("http://www.amtrekker.com/wp-content/uploads/player.swf", "WT4_4", "437", "522", "9.0.0", false, this.flashvars, this.params , this.attr ); } } WT4_4.start();

Thanks for the patience, Team! The next one should be on time!

I’m done.
