Cranberries and Pennsylvanians [video]

Hey Team,

I made it to Charlottesville, Virginia this morning safe and sound after driving straight through the night with Ryan, a Mansfield, PA resident, suffering from only very minor exhaustion. (And by minor I mean I only slid into unconsciousness against my will when I was sitting down or standing still, never when I was walking. Of course that made for a pretty embarrassing stretch at a local Starbucks. Lucky for Charley, I don’t drool.)

I was planning on writing up a rundown of my holiday layover spent under the care of the Pennsylvania ladies (Up, down, over, under…geez, I’m clever.) but I had a little extra time this morning and managed to finish up the cranberry podcast.

So, I’ll just say I had a great time with all of Jena and Theresa’s family members over the last few days and I’m a little disappointed I had to say goodbye again. Easily the toughest aspect of this adventure is constantly saying goodbye to all the awesome people I meet.

Okay…let’s get right to more of Brett being a sissy and making a fool of himself.

Leave comments, digg the page and podcast and…enjoy!

#27 Go on a lobster boat [podcast]

Hey Team,

Thanks so much for the feedback on yesterday’s video. Your comments were overwhelmingly positive and I’m going to do my best to get more of them out there. IN FACT, why don’t you kids feed your eyeballs on this little guy!

I’m done.

Brett.

Kind strangers keep ‘trekkers trekking. I think Mark Twain said that…maybe.

Or was it Steinbeck?

Enough Wading Already

Hey Team,

There’s been a whole lot of wading going on in the last couple days. Most importantly I went wading through a cranberry bog yesterday! Granted, it almost killed me and I’m more than a little surprised I didn’t lose any toes to frostbite but it’s done. And I have to admit it seemed like a much better idea six months ago when it made it on the list and the weather was nice and warm than it did yesterday when I was standing in front of an irrigation canal with my pants around my ankles.

I’ll even admit I may have lost my normally calm and cool composure when I started screaming things like, “NO NOO I CHANGED MY MIND!!!!” and “PLEASE GOD HELP ME GET OUT OF HERE I CAN’T FEEL MY FEET!!!” but all’s well that ends well, right? I can’t wait to get the video up so you guys can see how pathetic I’m capable of being. (Sometimes sarcasm just doesn’t sound right in type.)

Speaking of video, that’s where the rest of the wading comes in, I have a pile of tapes next to me as I type this and it amounts to about five podcasts More >

Lobster Bucket

Hey Team,

It never fails to surprise me when I see first hand the kind of power having a clear set of goals has over people. Knowing what you want and being willing to announce your objectives creates magic. If your goal were a destination then telling everyone you meet about it is like catching a ride with someone through all the traffic-congested freeways (I’m talking to you 405) and getting dropped off a block away without having to deal with all those “getting lost” bits.

I’m in Portland, Maine right now trying to hunt down a lobster boat to go out on. Yesterday I got an email from a contact I made through the site that lives in the area. I asked if he knew anyone in the Portland that could help out. He said he had a friend that tried to get on a lobster boat this summer and no one was interested in having tourists on their boats even if they were willing to work. He also said I probably wouldn’t be able to get on a boat at all in Portland.

Of course that made me think twice about going out to the wharf today. Fortunately, both times I More >

#47 Tour the Crayola Factory [podcast]

Hey Team,

Here’s the podcast where Amtrekker takes a road trip to Easton, PA to tour the Crayola Factory and exercise a couple dormant creative muscles.

Guest starring Ace the wonder monkey and Mr. Rogers’ shirt!

Enjoy!

I’m done.

Brett.

If you can’t help me get an “Amtrekker Green” crayon, then maybe you should just donate.

Come on, it’ll be fun!

Mister Rogers Would Be Proud

Hey Team.

Today was a great day. I’m one step closer to eventually seeing home again (and considering how cold it’s been in the North East DO NOT underestimate how much I’m missing Southern California weather) thanks to a daylong trip to the Crayola Factory!

Highlights:

1. Seeing how crayons are made (duh)!

2. Seeing Mister Roger’s Crayola Factory shirt from when he made the 100,000,000,000th crayon.

3. Making a sculpture of Ace the Wonder Monkey (the podcast will reveal all) using free Model Magic clay!

Lowlights:

1. No ghost of Mister Rogers haunting the halls.

2. No hardhats involved in the tour.

3. Couldn’t find anyone to convince that Crayola needs to adopt an “Amtrekker Green” crayon.

The evening was spent with camp counselors from the College Settlement Camps of Philadelphia where I’m staying (constantly thanking god that I’ve never seen Friday the 13th) thanks to a fortuitous meeting at a Halloween party in Boston last weekend. And since I get to wake up early tomorrow to see what life at camp is like I’m going to have to cut this post short. But there will be plenty more info about the great Crayola adventure AND a podcast coming up.

PLUS, I was able to re-shoot the closing to the More >

Color Me Excited

Hey Team,

Granted, my world has been colored by a lifetime spent in California but it just seems strange to sit in a car for six hours and cross through FIVE states. I could barely make it from LA to San Francisco in that time.

Today’s big event (besides finally caving in and purchasing new pants…which, apparently, you can’t buy with shoestrings) was a road trip with Chelsea, the Museum of Science educator that I met at a Halloween party last weekend. Turns out she was looking to take a trip to a summer camp she used to work at to visit some friends. Lucky for me, this summer camp also happens to be a scant hour car ride from the Crayola Factory AND has an open bed!

So tomorrow brings with it some #47 butt-kickery (it’s a word…promise) and a summer camp exploration.

Okay, I’ve gotta go make my bunk. Good thing the kids are all in school. I’m looking forward to pretending I’m back in the dorms.

I’m done.

Brett.

If you enjoyed this story, feel free to chip in for crayons…

then I can draw myself a map.

I Flunked Hitchhiking [podcast]

Hey Team,

Yesterday was pretty rough. I spent almost twelve hours either on a bus or waiting for a bus and didn’t have my first bite of food until 10 o’clock…at night. I also had my first big Amtrekker failure. And lucky you, you get to watch! Hope you enjoy my misery.

As always if you have problems with the player or with Quicktime you can head to iTunes and download it there our click here and watch the youtube version.

I’m done.

Brett.

If you liked this video why not buy me a better sign?

Don’t let me stop you.
