#45 Swamp Boat Ride With Gators!

Hey Team,

Amtrekker travels to Lafayette, LA and takes part in a swamp tous sponsored by The Atchafalaya Experience!

Pretty pictures and no cohesive narrative ensues!

Sorry for the delay, kids. For once it wasn’t my fault. The company that usually hosts my podcasts was having issues. But now, here it is!

Enjoy!

Fishing for Donations

Hey Team,

I’m finally back in the real world after an amazing trip to Zion National Park. My camera was dead while I was there but as soon as I get the pics from another camera I’ll post them here with some Zion story time. But for now, there’s something even more exciting to talk about!

Guess who learned to fly-fish!

I’m going to go ahead and assume you said, “BRETT!” and I’ll say, “Good guess!”

I was in the rustic world of Mapleton, UT this week where (thanks to Jesse and Adam) I was able to learn the basics from the safety and warmth of the edge of a pond.

It may not have been “A River Runs Through It” but it was probably exactly what I needed for a first try. PLUS, I’m a broke dude and free is always better than having to buy a fishing permit.

The experience as a whole went pretty well. I DID manage to catch a tree…twice. So that was fun. It was a little bit tougher to get the hang of a cast than I thought it would be.

Eventually though, after some practice I managed to catch a GIANT Bluegill! It was HUGE. At least a quarter More >

Swamptrekker

Hey Team,

Turns out updating a website while frantically barreling across the country in someone else’s truck on a tight deadline is a little more difficult than one may think. Blame the long BORING road for the dearth of posts this week. I’ll make up for it by making this a good one!

When I was passing through Louisiana I had the opportunity to take someone up on their offer to take me on a swamp boat ride with gators (#45)! Not a fan boat…but I’ve had several people write in and tell me how notoriously bad fan boats are for the ecosystem and now that I’ve actually seen one in action I’m not sure my conscience could take riding in it.

SO, thanks to Coerte (pronounced Kurt) over at The Atchafalaya Experience I was able to do one better! Kurt and his crew (son and grandson) have a set of much smaller boats that they use for swamp tours outside Lafayette, LA rigged with outboard motors, one of which will even continue to operate in soft mud. As a result they can get deeper into the swamp AND these guys love what they do. (I love people that love what they do…it usually More >

#41 Sandboarding! [podcast]

Hey Team,

I suppose the smart thing to do (if I were willing to cheat you people), especially in light of my last post promising to have a new video up every Wednesday at 6pm PST, would have been to hold onto this video for just a couple more days. But then you would have been gyped one whole video I haven’t even thought about making yet! (Yikes!)

PLUS, who could, in good conscience, hold back this kind of excitement and adventure from an eager group of people? So with out further ado…no wait, just a little more ado.

Sandboarding was awesome! I just want to take a second to thank everyone that made it happen…Cody, Rebecca, Erica, Saadia and Nate!

Okay, no more ado…I promise.

Where’s Charles Atlas When You Need Him?

Hey Team,

OMG SANDBOARDING FTW LOL JK! (Um…I have NO idea what that means. Let’s try again.)

A very long time ago I promised some friends I would be back in California this weekend (on account of one of my best friends has a birthday just a few days before mine and we usually do something biggish for the birthday weekend i.e. THIS weekend) not knowing what may be in store. The only info I had going for me was that I knew it involved the list so it could only be one of 26 activities. But even if I had known EXACTLY what we were going to do today I still would have been blown away!

Check this out!

Awesome. Just awesome. Period. (Do I have to write out period or does the period count as “period?” Oh well, more emphasis can’t hurt.)

Nate, Saadia, Cody, Rebecca and Erica all MADE their own sandboards PLUS one for me(!) and slapped the Amtrekker logo across all six!!!

And that’s just where it started. We went to Sand City, CA (I was blindfolded for the better part of the morning despite my repeated complaints of boredom.)

during an absolutely beautiful day and then spent the first several hours More >

#46 See a Movie at the Alamo Drafthouse [podcast]

Hey Team,

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Hope you all enjoy my present to you this year! (I’m just going to go ahead and assume your gift to me is going to be spreading the word about www.amtrekker.com.)

Y’all Come Back Now…

Hey Team,

Wow…rough travel week.

Just when I thought I had recovered from that 43-hour marathon of suck, I end up in a westbound car for a solid 22 straight hours of travel time. As a result y’all (Texas hasn’t worn off yet.) are just going to have to stop being all snooty about this weeks sporadic updates.

And since we’re on the subject of updates…here’s the important bit.

The Alamo Drafthouse is god’s gift to movie going debauchery. (And by debauchery I mostly mean pizza and drinks.)

And even cooler than being served food and drinks inside a plush movie theater with a full service wait staff is the fact that the Drafthouse doesn’t just waste its time on the newest trashiest excuse for cultural entertainment…they also spend some time on old trashy cultural entertainment.

The day before I left Austin (I wish I could tell you what day that was but everything kind of bleeds together when you live 40 hour days.) I went to a midnight showing of Home Alone to cross number 46 off my list!

Now, this was no average showing of Home Alone. This was what the Drafthouse folks call the Master Pancake Theater showing of Home Alone. For those of More >
